The cheongsam, also known as a qipao, is a close-fitting dress that originated in 1920s Shanghai. Most pankou (button) knots for a qipao dress are typically made of silk, or the same material as the dress. Over time, making pankou knots has become an art form, so they range from simple single-knot pankous, to more elaborate floral designs.
